ANAHEIM, CALIF. — SPM Inc. of Anaheim began production Jan. 16 at its facility in Cwmcarn, Wales, the firm's first plant outside North America, and its 15th division, said Andre LeBlanc, SPM/ Dynacast chief operating officer .

The 60,000-square-foot plant houses 17 injection presses with 55-350 tons of clamping force, and primarily will serve Northern Telecom. This is the third SPM facility built specifically in support of the Northern Telecom.

Original plans called for putting in nine presses and adding eight in the second half of the year. However, ``The plant's capacity is already being challenged,'' which necessitated starting with 17 presses. The facility has room for 30, LeBlanc said.

SPM transferred Michael Flynn from its Calgary, Alberta, plant to be general manager of SPM/ Wales, which employs 40.

LeBlanc said the firm plans another facility in the United Kingdom in 1997, and one in the United States. The company will focus on markets in Europe, South America and Malaysia.
