MAKATI CITY, PHILIPPINES — San Miguel Packaging Products Inc., a subsidiary of San Miguel Corp., a Manila, Philippines, conglomerate, has forged technical agreements with National Plastic Co. of Seoul, South Korea, and crate designer Schoeller International of Munich, Germany.

SMPP is the Philippines' largest manufacturer of plastic crates, pallets and refillable PET bottles for the domestic beverage and food industries.

Enrico C. Wong, assistant vice president and plastics operations manager, said SMPP began expanding its business in the international market through its facilities in China and Indonesia.

SMPP has two domestic plastic crate plants — one in Manila and the other in Cebu. It has a PET bottle plant in Canlubang, south of Manila. The PET plant makes the 11/2-liter plastic bottles for Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc.

Wong said plastic crates and pallets are important in the automation of the beverage industry. Consistent quality and dimensions have allowed the use of automated conveying and handling equipment, Wong said. SMPP is using some recycled plastic to mold the crates and pallets.
