Industrial water purifier Osmonics Inc. is taking a fresh look at medical devices, currently marketing three blood gas sensors, an over-the-counter cholesterol test and two pregnancy tests.

``A polycarbonate, track-etch, membrane filter is the hub of our technology,'' said Evailo Georgieff, an applications engineer in Livermore, Calif., for Osmonics' laboratory and specialty products group.

Laboratories and industries use the precision, two-dimensional microporous screens in cold sterilizations, tissue culture and cellular separations.

``We are expanding into other plastics,'' Georgieff said.

Osmonics processes German resins in the nuclear reactor at Texas A&M University in Bryan, Texas, to make rolls of the singlelayer, semipermeable, PC filters.
