GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA — An Australian manufacturer of PVC furniture and components recently licensed its outdoor products, which are manufactured to look like cane, to a Malaysian firm.

The Malaysian firm, which will trade as Polycane Asia, plans to establish a manufacturing site in Kuala Lumpur and will supply surrounding countries in Southeast Asia.

The company also is negotiating export orders for its medical furniture to Japan, and looking to secure licensing deals with North American plastics companies.

Gold Coast-based Polycane Pty. Ltd. was established 23 years ago to make PVC outdoor furniture, but increased competition led the company to diversify into medical rehabilitation furniture seven years ago.

Teresa Witney, Polycane manager, said the company's medical furniture division, Polymedic, is growing rapidly and now accounts for 60 percent of Polycane's total sales, which she would not reveal.

Polymedic, which produces PVC mobile shower chairs, bed safety rails, toilet seats, trolleys and trolley wheels for the health-care industry, has distributors in all Australian states.

Referring to licensing deals in North America, she said: ``There has been some interest already in the U.S. The health industry there is huge business.''
