DAVIE, FLA. — Gemini Plastic Services Inc. of Davie has moved injection molding into an explosive field. It molds tail fins that are fitted to dumb bombs as they are upgraded into smart bombs, according to President Crugar Tuttle.
The 1,000-pound and 2,000-pound U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy bombs are fitted with controls and adjusting plastic fins that replace fixed metal fins. The 11/2-inch-thick stabilizing fins weigh about 31/2 pounds and are molded of glass-reinforced polyphenylene sulfide. Tuttle said the military can save money by upgrading conventional bombs, as opposed to building new ones. The savings is about the cost of one new smart bomb for every 10 upgraded bombs.
