Ertl Co. purchases Britains Petite Ltd.

DYERSVILLE, IOWA — Ertl Co. expanded its European toys and collectibles presence by purchasing Britains Petite Ltd. of Nottingham, England.

Britains Petite makes plastic and metal model farm vehicles, figures, animals and buildings, plastic preschool toys, and metal military soldier collectibles. Its sales for the year ended Sept. 30 were about $22.6 million, according to U.S. Industries Inc., Ertl's parent company.

Ertl paid about $9 million for Britains Petite, formerly owned by Dobbs & Parks Industries. USI spokeswoman Diana Burton said no figures were available detailing the size of Britains Petite's plastics products business. Ertl, which is based in Dyersville, consolidated most of its plastic model kit molding in Tijuana, Mexico, in late 1995.

TR Technologies Inc. building plant in Ky.

CYNTHIANA, KY. — TR Technologies Inc. is building a wire harness plant in Cynthiana at a cost of $1.6 million to $2 million.

Jim Thompson, one of TR's owners, said the plant mainly will be an assembly operation but it will include a 50-ton injection molding machine to make connectors. TR will source jacketed wire and some connectors from outside suppliers, he said in a telephone interview.

Recently established TR is constructing a facility with 18,000 square feet of space and expects to begin operating in August. TR plans to sell wire harnesses to auto and other industries.
