GLASGOW, SCOTLAND — Expanding Scottish packaging producer Macfarlane Group (Clansman) plc has boosted its polyethylene film capacity with its purchase of extruder and printer Manton Plastics Ltd. for 1.5 million ($2.43 million).

The Glasgow-based paper and packaging manufacturer has acquired five industrial film businesses over the past three years. The company plans to establish a new industrial film division later this year, said its chairman, Lord Macfarlane of Bearsden, Scotland.

Manton Plastics of Stroud, England, which employs 26, currently is investing in high-quality printing equipment and improving production speed and efficiency.

``The acquisition ... expands our growing range of industrial film operations and brings synergy benefits through servicing and supplying products to other companies in the group,'' he said.

Other firms Macfarlane has acquired recently include stretch wrap, cling film and wide PE film producer Centurion Packaging Ltd.; Alport Plastics Ltd., which makes low density PE film; PE product converter and distributor Saranne Packaging Ltd.; and Amalgamated Plastics Ltd., a producer of bubble and pallet industrial film and stretch wrap products.
