EVANSVILLE, IND. (Dec. 8, 2:20 p.m. ET) — Berry Plastics Corp. will close its Vancouver, Wash., specialty films plant on Jan. 3.

The Evansville, Ind., firm said in a statement that it will transfer production to facilities in Wisconsin, Indiana and Georgia. The Vancouver operation makes film and sheeting for a variety of markets.

Berry film plants in the target states include Chippewa Falls, Wis.; Bloomington, Goshen and Odon in Indiana; and Columbus, Covington, Washington, Calhoun and Dalton in Georgia. Berry did not specify which locations will take up Vancouver’s work.

“Due to the excess capacity within the specialty films division and uncertain economic environment, a review of our business determined this step is necessary,” stated division President Dave Corey. “This action allows the company to utilize available capacity at other Berry facilities to best streamline its operations and most efficiently serve its customers.”

About 39 employees will be affected in Vancouver. Berry said it will help them find employment at other Berry operations or within the local labor market.

A Berry spokeswoman said the company did not want to go into more detail than the Nov. 3 announcement.

Berry’s film and sheet sales were about $1.7 billion for the year ended Oct. 2, 2010, according to Plastics News survey information. The business employs about 5,000. In addition to blown and cast film, the company does bag making, laminating, coating and printing at its 27 plants in North America. Materials processed include polyethylene, PET, polypropylene, PVC, polystyrene, nylon and post-consumer resins.

Berry’s Vancouver announcement follows recent statements that it will close a rigid packaging plant in Henrico, Va., and a closures operation in Madisonville, Ky.
