Makrolon shines in LED reflector

A Bayer flame-retardant grade of polycarbonate makes the grade in a light-emitting diode light designed to replace recessed fluorescent lights.

Fraen’s Optics Division chose Makrolon 6265X, a high-flow resin with good release properties for the Twelve LED Troffer Reflector. The Bayer MaterialScience LLC grade has earned Underwriter Laboratories’ UL 94 V-O rating at 1.5 millimeter.

The optical efficiency of the polycarbonate gives a reflector with a pleasing, diffuse illumination suited to a range of applications and fixtures.

“Not only were we impressed with the properties of this plastic, we were also able to process it using our existing machinery – without having to make any modifications or upgrades – which was beneficial from a manufacturing perspective,” states David Cohen, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Fraen’s Optics Division, in a news releasae. Fraen’s is a specialist in optics for high-powered LEDs in Reading, Mass.
