TenCate combines and relocates California facilities

FAIRFIELD, CALIF. (Feb. 16, 2 p.m. ET) — TenCate Advanced Composites North America consolidated three separate sites originally located in Benicia, Calif. The facilities were relocated to a 65,000-square-foot aerospace facility in Fairfield, Calif., just 10 miles away. As such, the company was able to retain the original work force of approximately 100 employees.

The facility is made up of two different areas with one creating advanced composite materials for the aerospace industry and the other producing compression molding of composite materials for the aircraft industry.

“Having three separate facilities was inefficient,” Michael Cichon, director of marketing, said. “Even though they were all in the same area, they were three separate buildings. So we increased the size and layout for better efficiency.”

Upgrades include additional power, freezer storage for composite laminates, Quality Control labs and office space. The Fairfield facility received AS9100:2009 Rev C approval earlier this year.

TenCate is a multinational company that combines textile technology and chemical processes to produce protective materials. TCAC USA supplies composite pre-impregnated thermoset epoxies and cyanate esters, thermoplastic laminates, adhesives, high quality thermoplastic composite prepreg tapes in a variety of fiber/thermoplastic resin combinations and syntactic foams.

The company has three primary prepreg production facilities, two in the U.S. in Fairfield and Morgan Hill, Calif., and one in Netherlands.

Just last year, Plastics News reported the Morgan Hill facility added space for thermoplastic composites manufacturing, R&D labs and office space. The press release said the new expanded facility will complement Morgan Hill by providing two sites for redundancy and added capacity.

A subsidiary of TenCate, CCS Composites, benefitted from this investment as well by increasing its pressing capacity by 50 percent with five-axis routing capability and 1,000 ton pressing capacity for large parts.
