HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA (Feb. 21, 2:10 p.m. ET) — Since recently expanding its recycling program, Halifax said it has already reached its diversion goal for plastics.

The program, which began in September, has allowed all plastics except for Styrofoam-style materials to be recycled, CBC News reported.

The city’s recycling rate is two months ahead of schedule.

“When we started the program in September, we expected to collect an extra 500 tons by the end of March,” Gord Helm, manager of solid waste for the Halifax Regional Municipality, told the news organization. “We reached 592 tons by the end of January.”

Despite the plastics gain, residents can do better with their recyclables and compostable material. Helm told the news organization that 50,000 tons of recyclables still heads to the landfill.
