Processing Technologies International LLC, a maker of sheet extrusion lines in Aurora, Ill., has launched a real-time intrinsic viscosity monitoring system for PET sheet production, developed in cooperation with Plastic Technologies Inc. of Holland, Ohio.
The system allows for the material formulation to be adjusted online, to maximize product performance.
Intrinsic viscosity is a measurement of the molecular weight distribution of PET, which impacts the performance characteristics such as impact, clarity and strength.
“Our approach to IV monitoring is unique because it offers an instant IV measurement so we can readjust the formulation to potentially reduce costs,” said James Johnson, the extrusion machinery maker’s senior vice president of applications and technology. “Basically, we can provide quality assurance for the entire shipment and ensure that off-spec IV material will no longer be discovered during the forming process.”
