Plastic pipe producer Ostendorf Kunststoffe GmbH & Co. KG is saving 3.3 percent in energy use in an extruder gearbox.

The Vechta, Germany, firm is using a new high-performance, fully synthetic industrial gear oil in the machinery. Mobil SHC Gear 220 also extends oil drain intervals, according to ExxonMobil.

Ostendorf tested the new lubricant on a Weber extruder gearbox and found it also resulted in an 8 degree reduction in gearbox temperatures, thus reducing downtime and component wear.

“Energy costs are one of the highest burdens on manufacturing companies and any reduction in consumption has an immediate and beneficial impact on the bottom line,” states Andrea Jacobsen, industrial marketing representative for ExxonMobil Lubricants and Petroleum Specialties Co.’s Europe, Africa and Middle East regions, based in Brussels, Belgium.
