NEW DELHI (March 8, 1:50 p.m. ET) — Bangalore, India-based Steer Engineering Pvt. Ltd used the recent Plastindia show to launch a compounding pelletizing system, its SPL 40 series, expanding beyond making extrusion lines into manufacturing complete systems.

The SPL 40 is a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a feeder, strand die head, water trough, air knife, pelletizer and classifier, said Steer director & global CEO Satish Padmanabhan.

The design targets small and mid-level companies, and has particular application in color masterbatches, pre-colored compounds for the automotive and appliance industries, and modified polypropylene and high impact polystyrene, he said at Plastindia, held Feb. 1-6 in New Delhi.

“It would cater to the requirements for small quantities, [and] control over work-in-progress during grade change and power failures,” Padmanabhan said. “Change over time is very fast and wastage is less.”

“We have been looking towards having presence in this segment for quite some time,” he said.

If the SPL (Super Production Lines) series meets expectations, the company will significantly ramp up the number of extruders it makes, Padmanabhan said. It sold around 50 extruders in 2011, but with SPL, it targets 200-plus machines this year, he said.

“We are planning to produce around 15-20 machines per month depending upon the orders,” said Padmanabhan.

The machine is designed for India but exports are possible in the future, he said: “Currently, SPL is India specific but it could be customized with a few modifications to suit the export market.”
