NPE2012 in Orlando will feature some large plastics machines. But Labtech Engineering Co. Ltd. should draw attention because of something very small: the world’s smallest, fully functioning blown film line.

The Ultra Micro Film blowing line by Labtech (Booth 6185) fits on a tabletop.

Engineers and technicians at Labtech in Thailand built the film line as a New Year’s gift to company President Peter Jurgensen. It is a nearly exact replica of a much larger line.

But the little machine performed so well that company officials decided to offer it to customers worldwide, for learning institutions and research.

The blown film line uses an extruder with a 8 millimeter screw, with a 30:1 length to diameter ratio, so it can handle fairly large pellets. The spiral spider tie has a 20 mm diameter. The film tower width is just 50 mm, so it can product a film with a layflat width of up to 45 mm.
