AURORA, ONTARIO (March 27, 4:50 p.m. ET) — Magna International Inc. and Zoltek Cos. Inc. have announced a new “exclusive global collaborative partnership” to speed development of low-cost carbon fiber sheet molding compounds for the auto industry.

A newly-developed carbon fiber SMC from Aurora, Ontario-based Magna’s Exteriors and Interiors group is using Zoltek’s Panex 35 carbon fiber combined with Magna’s EpicBlendsSMC formulation, the companies said in a March 27 news release.

The EpicBlendSMC EB CFS-Z material will allow Magna to offer an expanded range of lightweight parts and systems for passenger vehicles, commercial trucks and other transportation customers. Magna will also offer the blend for sale to other molders.

“We have long regarded the automotive industry as the largest potential user of low-cost, high-performance carbon fibers,” said Zsolt Rumy, chairman and CEO for St. Louis-based Zoltek.
