Enercon debuts hand-held plasma treater

ORLANDO, FLA (April 4, 7:15 a.m. ET) — A universal hand-held atmospheric plasma treater was unveiled at NPE by Enercon Industries Corp. (Booth 4147).

“Dyne-A-Grip IT is a hand-held that allows users to do lab scale atmospheric plasma quality work and some other light duty work. It has all the features of blown ion technology,” said Rory Wolf, vice president of business development at Enercon, in a booth interview.

The plasma treater cleans, etches and functionalizes surfaces and is designed for use in lab environments, plasma feasibility studies and for light production. The plasma it generates is gentler and at lower temperatures and can handle delicate surfaces.

“A lot of times, you need to work on a smaller scale – A lot of people said there was nothing like in the industry,” he said, noting that demand was strong.

Enercon uses a blown-ion discharge to bombard the surface with positive ions, roughening the surface, and facilitate a micro-etching or scrubbing effect to remove organic and inorganic contaminants. This creates more bonding sites and allows for better adhesion.

Wolf also displayed a new Automated Segment Actuator that allows blow molders to treat segments of the web without actually climbing to pick out the areas it wanted isolated.

“If want lanes of treatment, the operator had to climb the tower and pull out the segment where it wanted treatment and push in areas that it didn’t want treated,” he said.

The automated system allows an operator to handle the changes from an operator station.

Enercon is headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wis., and supplies the plastics and packaging industries. It started in business 38 years ago and Don Nimmer, its CEO and owner, remains a key part of the company. The company makes custom built atmospheric treating systems for rolls, webs, sheets and three-dimensional objects.

The company also has operations in Germantown, Wis.; Aylesbury, England; and Bangalore, India.
