Ultrasion using ultrasound to improve processing

ORLANDO, FLA. (April 5, 5:25 p.m. ET) — Spain-based technology start-up Ultrasion SL aims to use ultrasound to improve processing of plastics, aluminum and magnesium.

“Ultasound can excite materials” without need for thermal energy, said Xavier Plantà, general manager of Ultrasion and innovation director of technology incubator Fundació Privada Ascomm. Both are located in a technology park in Cerdanyola del Vallè, Spain, near Barcelona.

Ultrasion was formed in July 2010 and, in May, anticipates delivering Sonorus-brand prototype processing units to research institutions Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona and Universitat de Girona in Girona.

“We have two potential commercial customers, one each in Switzerland and the Netherlands,” Plantà said.

Plantà said the system to transfer market technologies based on ultrasounds is priced at €80,000 (US$106,500).

The Ascomm organization employs about 200 in a center for creating new plastics, metals and stamping technologies and providing licenses to end users. Ascomm operated with a 2011 budget of €12 million (US$16 million) from private sources.

Ultrasion with four employees is among five Ascomm-aligned incubator operations with total employment of about 50.
