Sabic showcases a number of new applications

ORLANDO, FLA. (April 5, 5:20 p.m. ET) — From trucks and agricultural sprayers to office equipment and lighting, Sabic Innovative Plastics displayed a diverse range of new applications for some of its materials at NPE. Its 8,800-square foot booth (#29000), said to be the largest for any resin manufacturer at the show, provided a showcase for these and other products:

* The gleaming white cab on a 2013 Volvo heavy-duty truck featured “the trucking industry’s first injection molded roof fairing,” made using Sabic’s Cycoloy polycarbonate/ABS resin. The large part was made using proprietary in-mold coating technology from CK Technologies LLC, a unit of Cascade Engineering. The resin maker also touted the first use of post-consumer recycled material in a heavy truck. Its Valox iQ polybutylene terephthalate resin, which includes up-cycled PET water bottles, found its way into the brackets of the side air deflection system for all seven models of the 2012 Volvo platform of heavy-duty trucks. Valox iQ can contain up to 60 percent PCR content.

* The shiny red hood of a large, ride-on agricultural sprayer by Equipment Technologies shed some 140 pounds in weight by using a vacuum-formed thermoplastic sheet instead of the previous fiberglass version. AMD Plastics formed Allen Extruders LLC’s Alextra-MV sheet made with Sabic IP’s Lexan SLX polycarbonate resin coextruded over Cycoloy PC/ABS resin.

* Tokyo-based Canon Electronics Inc. has chosen Sabic’s Xenoy iQ ENH resin with chemically up-cycled post-consumer PET as the material for the housing on one of its new high-speed document scanners. Canon previously used a PC/ABS blend without any PCR content for its scanner housings. Sabic claims the material offers “robust non-brominated, non-chlorinated flame retardance” along with the ability to design the housings with thinner walls without sacrificing performance.

* Sabic also rolled out new grades of its Lexan CFR (clear flame retardant) copolymer and Lexan LUX resins. The CFR grades address demand in the consumer electronics and appliance sectors for a clear, sustainable, FR material, while the expanded LUX line is targeted at light-emitting diode lighting applications such as light guides and lenses.

Keith Smith, the recently appointed executive vice president of Sabic Innovative Plastics, outlined these new products, and recapped a series of previously reported capital investments in his first media briefing since joining the Pittsfield, Mass.-based firm in December.
