ORLANDO, FLA. (April 5, 5:15 p.m. ET) — While mold makers and component suppliers are busy helping companies develop the perfect high precision mold, Advanced Concepts & Precision Components LLC is looking at what happens to that mold once it goes on the shop floor.
Often, during setup, the traditional steel locating ring on the floor strikes the injection molding press platen, creating small chips on the platen. Those chips can throw off placement of the mold on the platen, causing small deviations on the surface that impact precision during molding.
“The surface can be repaired, but never to (machine) specs again,” said President Tony Cerniglia.
Cerniglia created the platenGUARD Locating Ring with a protective surface on the steel ring to reduce the potential for damage to the platen surface from the locating ring. The platenGUARD is now being used by both tooling components and machine manufacturers and is on display at Mold-Masters Ltd. (Booth 4463). PCS Co. (Booth 2571) and DMS (Booth 7685) both have licensed the ring and are showing it at NPE 2012.
The platenGUARD comes in two styles and can be retrofit on existing standard rings. Users can also brand the guards with their own logo.
