ORLANDO, FLA. (April 9, 1:40 p.m. ET) — Wang Qingzhao, professor and director of the Polymer Processing Technology Institute at Shandong University of Science and Technology, brought UHMW-PE extrusion technology to NPE2012, looking to “fill in the blanks” in the U.S. market.

The single-screw extrusion technology can make UHMW-PE pipe with diameters from 50 to 1,200 millimeters and thickness that range from 2-50 millimeters, he touted. It can also make rod, profiles and sheet.

Wang said his technology is being used by more than 20 processors in China for such end uses as mine tailings papers, oil well pump pipes, and infrastructure.

“I think there are blanks in the U.S. market,” he said

U.S. drilling uses HDPE to prevent the inner walls of the steel drilling string, quoting the American Petroleum Institute. UHMW-PE is a much better alternative as it offers superior resistance to abrasion, high impact strength, chemical stability and solvent resistance.

He said Europe makes ram extruders for UHMW-PE, but his single-screw technology is more efficient.

“I’m looking for distribution partners in the U.S.,” he said at the NPE of booth of Sichuan Gaodete Science & Technology Co. Ltd. He is a partner of the company.
