The Dyna-Purge Division of Shuman Plastics Inc. said Fam-Lee Products Inc., a custom injection molder in Loveland, Colo., ran trials of the new Dyna-Purge E2, a mechanical and non-abrasive purging agent, on three different parts.

Fam-Lee Products saw a significant reduction in downtime and the use of up to 50 percent less purging material, in all three trials.

Dyna-Purge introduced E2 at NPE2012. The purging compound is for injection molding, extrusion and compounding.

Fam-Lee Products molds a broad range of parts, including non-invasive medical components, tube connectors and other devices, from nylon 6.6, polycarbonate and other resins.

Fam-Lee President Edward Popke noted the company’s biggest purchasing challenge is changing from black or colored nylon to a lower-temperature material such as white ABS.

The molder purges as many as five or ten times a day.

The Depew, N.Y-based Shuman Plastics said a commissioned study by the University of Akron’s Institute of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering said Dyna-Purge E2 performed much better than a mechanical abrasive purge and a chemical purge for polysulfone, polyetherimide and polyphthalamide. The mechanical and nonabrasive E2 passed while the other two methods failed over all three materials.
