WESTLAKE, OHIO -- Personal experience can drives product innovation, according to two experts at the Plastics in Medical Devices 2012 in Westlake. One such innovation is a patient urine bag that uses a wireless sensor, said Brian Gilbert, CEI of Future Path Medical Holding Co. Gilbert and Claire Zangerle, president and CEO of the Visiting Nurse Association of Ohio, discussed the ups and downs journey of the product innovation. A patient's suggestion to ease the hazards and discomfort of his urine bag overflowing lead to the creation of a wireless sensor system, Gilbert said. The system protects the patient, assists nurses in accurate readings and ultimately brings cost savings, Zangerle added. The product uses PET and vinyl materials, and offers hope for further innovations, the experts said. The conference was held June 11-13.
