ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA (Aug. 2, 1 p.m. ET) – The London 2012 Olympics aren’t finished yet, but already work is underway at improving the infrastructure for the 2014 winter games in Sochi, Russia.

Sevkabel Group of Cos., a licensee of Dow Chemical Co., has been awarded a contract to supply electrical cable being installed in the Sochi and Krasnodar regions of Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The installation is part of increasing electrical capacity to power Olympic venues in the mountain resort of Krasnaya Polyana and the ski resort complexes in Rosa-Hutor and the Imeretinskaya Valley. Dow’s electrical & telecommunications business unit (DET) is providing product and technical support.

The work includes Endurance crosslinked polyethylene compounds for medium and high voltage cable insulation. The cables will be installed underground to manage long-term reliability issues, some of which are associated with extreme weather and terrain conditions in the region.

Filip Tauson, commercial director for Europe/Middle East/Africa with DET says: “In addition to obvious benefits through reducing power losses associated with challenging terrain and weather, underground systems offer improved economics over the life of the system. Both short- and long-term maintenance costs are reduced over a life expectancy of more than 40 years.”

The cables destined for the Winter Olympics range from 6kV to 220kV rating. Some 54 kilometers of 110kV HV cable and 340 kilometers of 10kV MV cable have already been installed.

Tauson adds: “Dow Endurance compounds … will help provide the reliability and long service life needed to support the Krasnodar region well past the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and into the future.”
