A Southern expansion by materials maker Royce Group is featured in this week’s Material Insights video. New Jersey-based Royce has bought a 48,000-square-foot building in Gaffney, S.C., for use as a textile dye production plant and as a warehouse for the firm's lines of epoxies and plastic compounds and concentrates. If demand warrants, the site could be used to make plastic-based products as well. Royce is spending about $3 million to buy the building and install new equipment. An expansion by thermoplastic composite maker CPI Binani also is featured in this week's video. The firm is adding a 50,000-square-foot expansion to its plant in Winona, Minn. CPI Binani uses direct in-line compounding to make long-fiber thermoplastics, and already has added 20 employees in anticipation of the expansion. The video wraps up with a pair of technology-based news items. In Minnesota, thermoset resin maker Interplastic Corp. has acquired polymer-based gel coats and coatings technology from Valspar Corp. for an undisclosed price. While in California, biotechnology firm Verdezyne Inc. has been granted a production process patent to make a bio-based adipic acid for use in production of nylon 6/6 resin.
