SEATTLE (Sept. 11, 8 a.m. ET) — Seattle Mariners baseball fans at Safeco Field were recently able to receive their traditional ballpark peanuts in a new way.
The first 10,000 fans to catch the Mariners take on the Boston Red Sox on Sept. 5 received a free bag of peanuts in a 100 percent compostable prototype snack bag designed by BASF Corp., according to a news release.
Trying inventive ways to reduce waste isn’t new for the Mariners and its Safeco Field. The team is on track this season to divert 85 percent of its waste from landfills, up from 12 percent in 2006.
“All of our service ware is already compostable, but snack food bags have been one of the biggest barriers preventing us from getting to our goal,” Scott Jenkins, Mariners’ vice president of operations, said in a statement. “Flexible packaging made with BASF biopolymers could represent the holy grail of greening for our waste stream.”
The Mariners, a member of the Green Sports Alliance, a nonprofit organization committed to helping sports teams, venues and leagues lower their environmental impacts, are seeking a goal of a 90 percent diversion rate.
This isn’t the first time a compostable snack package was introduced, but the previous implementation fell short of consumer expectations, according to the release. BASF’s recent prototype packaging is developed with what it calls its “advanced biopolymer technology.”
