HARTSVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 25, 12:45 p.m. ET) — Sonoco Recycling LLC is investing $2 million to upgrade the Onslow County materials recovery facility in North Carolina.

The Hartsville-based company said the changes will allow the location to process more recyclables.

“In the year that we’ve been here, we’ve found the Onslow community to be very progressive in the areas of sustainability and recycling. We are excited to provide them with expanded recycling capabilities and help the county continue to move forward in these areas,” said Ray Howard, general manager of Sonoco Recycling, in a statement.

Sonoco Recycling operates six MRFs and serves more than 125 communities in which curbside-collected residential and commercial materials are processed. It is a unit of Sonoco Products Co., a paper and packaging company that uses recycled fiber to make new products.

Sonoco Recycling collects more than 3 million tons of paper, metals and plastics each year.

“Sonoco Recycling’s expertise and many years of experience in the recycling industry will continue to move the county forward with efficient and sustainable waste management for Onslow County,” said Scott Bost, county solid waste director, in a statement.
