The Composites Group of North Kingsville, Ohio, has developed a series of thermoset molding compounds that use renewable raw materials.

SymTerra compounds contain plant-derived materials that reduce the materials’ carbon footprint. They are also lightweight to improve energy efficiency in transportation end-uses.

“Removing weight while maintaining full-performance capabilities is key to energy efficiency, whether in a combustion-fueled hybrid or electric vehicle or other applications where weight is a consideration,” according to Jeff Cash, corporate director of sales and marketing for Composites Group.

SymTerra composites have a specific gravity of 1.2 or lower, allowing for weight reductions of 30 percent or more compared with conventional composites, the company claims.
