DETROIT (Oct. 11, 1 p.m. ET) — General Motors has named Kim Brycz, a veteran purchasing executive, as interim purchasing chief while the company seeks a permanent replacement for Bob Socia.

Brycz, the company’s 51-year-old executive director of indirect materials, machinery and equipment, will oversee global purchasing while the company conducts a search for a permanent chief, GM spokesman Dave Roman said Tuesday.

Socia became president of GM China on Oct. 1.

GM is considering candidates inside and outside the company, Roman said. However, he was unable to confirm whether Brycz is a candidate.

She will continue to oversee GM’s purchases of machinery, information technology and sales and marketing services while she fills in as interim chief.

In 2009, Brycz filled in as interim purchasing chief for six weeks after Bo Andersson left the company. It was a significant job; at the time, GM was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

Brycz is a GM lifer. In 1983, she joined the company’s Cadillac Motor Car Division as an assistant purchaser and has since held a variety of purchasing assignments.

In 2010, she was named executive director in charge of electrical systems, batteries and hybrids. Later that year, she received her current assignment overseeing GM’s purchase of nonproduct goods and services.

Automotive News named Brycz one of the 100 Leading Women in the North American Auto Industry in 2010.
