PITTSBURGH (Oct. 22, 1:15 p.m. ET) — The United Steelworkers union has joined with other organizations to erect billboards in Ohio and Wisconsin to counter billboards put up in the states the union said are meant to intimidate voters and suppress turnout.

The Steelworkers said the billboards to be erected by the group it joined, the Election Protection Coalition, will tell voters to “Stand Up and Have Your Say – VOTE” and “When We Vote, We Are All Equal.”

The effort by the USW and Common Cause, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the National Education Association, the Advancement Project and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights are aimed at counteracting signs erected on Clear Channel billboards that warn of prison terms and fines for anyone engaged in voter fraud.

“Clear Channel, owner of the billboards, said they were financed by a ‘family foundation’ that insists on remaining anonymous,” the USW said in a news release.
