PHOENIX (Oct. 23, 10:45 a.m. ET) — Eight schools in Phoenix will compete to see which one can collect and recycle the most plastic bags.
The effort is in celebration of the fifth anniversary of Bag Central Station, a program to collect and recycle plastic bags.
The winning school will receive $1,000 on Nov. 15. Each school has a different drop-off location as part of the competition; the official contest runs until Oct. 26.
“This is a great partnership between the city and the business community in an effort to reduce waste and educate our children about recycling,” said Phoenix City Councilman Bill Gates in a statement.
