BRUSSELS (Dec. 3, 10:35 a.m. ET) — Industry body PlasticsEurope says a new French law restricting the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in packaging has no benefit for consumers and will severely distort the internal market.
On Nov. 28, the French General Assembly adopted a law proposal which will restrict the use of BPA is all food contact packaging starting in January 2015.
PlasticsEurope says the French government is disregarding existing European laws and that there is no evidence that exposure to BPA poses a risk to human health.
This decision is therefore in conflict with European Union (EU) food contact regulation and the opinions of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), says the body.
