Metabolix adds compostable film grade

December 5, 2012

Metabolix Inc. has developed a new, certified compostable film grade.

Mvera B5008 is compounded in Europe but is widely available for global customers, the Cambridge, Mass., firm has announced. Potential applications include compost bags, can liners for organic waste and retail bags.

Metabolix claims the new product is BPI certified to meet ASTM D6400 standard for industrial compostables and by Vincotte to meet the EN 13432 standard for compostable plastics. The resin can be blown or cast and features many properties of petroleum-based resins, including excellent melt strength, tear resistance, good barrier and good adhesion with other compostable polymers.

“With growing consumer demand for sustainable products and governments across the globe implementing regulations governing the use of petroleum-based plastics, innovative organizations are looking to certify compostable films as a more sustainable alternative,” states Metabolix vice president of commercial development of biopolymers Bob Engle.
