Arkema has new PVDF for membranes

Published: December 5, 2012 6:00 am ET

Arkema Inc. is supplying a new Kynar polyvinylidene fluoride resin for membrane applications.

“A key to the improved efficiency of water filtration technology is the material construction of the membranes,” notes Arkema America’s industrial business manager and global advisor for fluoropolymers Dave Seller. “The materials of the future need to be durable and resistant to multiple methods of chemical and thermal treatment.”

Kynar 15’s chemical resistance makes it well suited for fluid handling component materials in the water and membrane industries, according to Arkema America in King of Prussia, Pa.

Kynar 15 is a semi-crystalline, high-viscosity polymer. Its physical properties and chemical resistance are designed for microfiltration and ultra-filtration membranes for water purification. Hollow fiber and flat sheet membranes, in particular, gain from its use. Kynar 15 can be dissolved in certain solvents to make them useful in solution processing applications.
