NEW ALBANY, OHIO (Dec. 21, 12 p.m. ET) — Blow molder Axium Plastics LLC is planning an $8.9 expansion at its New Albany plant.

Axium is building a 900,000-square-foot addition to its Ohio facility, said Scott McAfee, a spokesman for the city of New Albany.

Based in Mississauga, Ontario, Axium built its 110,000-square-foot New Albany plant in 2011. The plant currently employs about 130 people.

According to local news reports, Axium plans to shift some production from its Mississauga and Atlanta plants to the New Albany facility.

The company will add 40 jobs at the location with an estimated payroll of $1.2 million, McAfee said by phone.

Axium will receive an additional 15-year, 100 percent property tax abatement from the city, a repeat of the benefits it received for its initial $16.2 million investment.

The plant is one of several manufacturing facilities in New Albany’s “personal care and beauty campus.” The area houses the headquarters of contract packager Accell Inc. and a plant operated by VeePak Inc., a Chicago-based contract packager, among others.

“[The campus] really helps create this vertical supply chain. So many of [the businesses] work with similar customers,” McAfee said.

In the last few years, the campus has generated 1,500 jobs, 85 percent of them new to Ohio, he added.

Axium makes rigid plastic containers for the personal-care, cosmetics, food and automotive markets. Company officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
