CUPERTINO, CALIF. -- Retail establishments in Cupertino, the global headquarters of electronics giant Apple Inc., will soon be banned from distributing single-use plastic bags, San Jose Mercury News reported.

The Cupertino City Council approved the ordinance in a unanimous vote at their meeting Jan. 15. Starting Oct. 1, retailers will be required to charge 10 cents for a paper bag and plastic bags would only be allowed for fruit, vegetables and meat.

Restaurants and nonprofit charitable organizations are exempt from the ordinance, the newspaper reported.
