Bayer MaterialScience buys land for specialty films expansion

PITTSBURGH -- Bayer MaterialScience LLC has purchased almost 11 acres of land adjacent to its film and sheet plant in South Deerfield, Mass., to allow for future expansion.

Pittsburgh-based BMS "is committed to its specialty films business in North America," BMS executive Shaun Gaus said in a Jan. 22 news release. "This land purchase supports our future growth plans for this important region."

Gaus serves as general manager for BMS' Functional Films business in North America. No purchase price for the land was disclosed. A BMS spokesperson said the firm has no immediate expansion plans.

The 147,000-square-foot South Deerfield plant makes specialty film and sheet based on polycarbonate, thermoplastic polyurethane and other materials. Those film and sheet products are sold into various markets, including medical, automotive, sports/recreation and safety/security.

BMS is a unit of Bayer AG, a plastics and chemicals giant based in Leverkusen, Germany. The business is a major producer of PC, TPU and other specialty resins and also operates a sheet production plant in Sheffield, Mass. BMS had sales of just under $3 billion in North America in 2011.

BMS made a couple of moves with its sheet business during 2012, first acquiring the Tuffak brand name and PC sheet production assets in the United States from Arkema Inc., and later selling its North American Vivak-brand polyester sheet business to Plaskolite Inc.
