In 2007, shocked by a viral photo of a dead seabird with a stomach full of plastic, Beth Terry decided to give up plastic. The Oakland, Calif.,-based accountant began cataloging every piece of plastic waste she generated — a total of 2.11 pounds in 2011 — and documenting the journey on her blog, “My Plastic-Free Life” (formerly “Fake Plastic Fish”).
