ATLANTA -- A record 10 million pounds of batteries were collected for recycling in 2012, product stewardship organization Call2Recycle announced. That's a 16 percent increase over 2011 collections.

California became the first state in this history of the collection program to contribute more than one million pounds.

"Our 2012 performance is vitally linked to the support of our program participants, consumers, and key constituents," Carl Smith, CEO and president of Call2Recycle, said in a statement. "Without their environmental commitment, we would not be able to continue successfully collecting, transporting and recycling the millions of pounds of batteries across the U.S. and Canada."
