MADISON, WIS. -- An estimated $64 million worth of recyclable plastic is landfilled annually in Wisconsin, a new study by the state's Department of Natural Resources reported.

The study was conducted to find actions that could be taken to capture more plastic as a means for economic and job growth. The study emphasizes the potential to increase recycling of plastic bags and other film plastics, as well as rigid plastics, the DNR said. As a result, the agency has already agreed to launch a pilot program on recycling of flexible film packaging.

"Increasing plastics recycling in the state will open the door for greater economic and job development particularly through expansion of existing business but also in creation of new business," said Dan Krivit, senior project manager for Foth and co-author of the report, in a statement.
