Thermoformer Portage Plastics Corp. picked Zontec’s Synergy statistical process control software for use in two plants.

Heidi Beaver, quality technician, said the Portage, Wis.-based company has a diverse customer base, everything from instant cereal bowls to clamshell packaging to baby wipe containers. “Because every customer’s job is unique, I needed a program that would help me analyze the data in numerous ways regardless of the difference in our customers’ processes,” she said.

“The reason we selected Synergy was its ease of use, because it was Windows-based software and because it was an American-based company with a worldwide presence,” Beaver said. Zontec is based in Cincinnati.

Synergy, which runs in real-time, paid for itself in the first year, she said. “Our product-returned rate has dropped to less than half of a percent of what we are currently shipping.”

At its sister location in Brownsville, Texas, Portage Plastics has trained operators to take their own part measurements and enter the data directly into the software, during second and third shifts. That plant is staffed with a quality technician for day shift only.
