Herbold Meckesheim USA’s SB Series of granulators uses a patented screw-feed mechanism to move the material through, so they are quieter and more efficient than gravity-fed size reduction equipment for pulverizing PET bottles and other recyclable plastics, according to the company in Smithfield, R.I.
Suitable for dry or wet operation, an SB Series granulator can process up to seven tons of plastic an hour. Material is delivered from the hopper to the cutting chamber by one or more conveyor screws mounted at an angle to the rotor axis. The screws maintain a steady feeding place, even if the plastic is a hodgepodge of sizes and shapes.
Herbold claims throughput is 30-50 percent more than gravity-fed machines with cutting chambers of the same size.
Other benefits include reduced fines and dust, since granulated particles spend less time in the cutting chamber.
