SYLMAR, CALIF. — Custom injection molder C&G Plastics Inc. is nearing completion of a $200,000 project renovating its 14,000-square-foot facility in Sylmar.

C&G purchased the building for $1.2 million in April 2012 after leasing it for 20 years, said President Gregory Leighton.

"We will be operational in April and complete the new floors in June," Leighton said.

During 2011, C&G acquired two all-electric Haitian Venus presses. One of 330 tons went into service in January and the other of 259 tons in July.

C&G employs 33, operates seven presses with clamping forces of 5-330 tons and has end markets mostly in aerospace, housewares and agriculture. Leighton projects 2013 business for the firm being "a little better" than the $2.5 million in 2012 sales.

The firm does business as C&G Mercury Plastics, representing "a nod to my uncle Bill Rhoads, who started Mercury Plastics in 1947," Leighton said. Plastics processing occurred in Santa Monica, Calif., for 40 years before Greg Leighton's father, Chuck, moved the subsequently combined business to Sylmar.

Greg Leighton has volunteer roles with the Washington, D.C.-based Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. He is chairman of the western regional advisory board and a member of the national SPI public policy committee, the national SPI processors' council and the council's subcommittee on pharmaceutical and medical device applications. Also, Leighton is vice president of the Western Plastics Pioneers board.
