Bayer MaterialScience has developed a more sustainable polycarbonate/PET blend for automotive body parts.
The firm says Makrkoblend GR235 M is made from post-consumer and post-industrial recycling streams. Target applications include spoilers, trunk lids and skirts, antenna covers and other components where non-recycled PC/PET is used.
Bayer claims the new material conserves energy and raw materials, allowing auto makers and their suppliers to offer more sustainable choices in materials. The combination of properties of the two resins gives a very tough material able to withstand extreme physical, chemical and environmental punishment.
Bayer touts the recycled blend for molded parts that require no reworking and can be coated without pretreatment to give components with Class A surfaces. The firm, with its North American headquarters in Pittsburgh, says the blend can replace aluminum, sheet steel and sheet molding compounds.
