A Royal DSM NV subsidiary is licensing a specialty polyurethane to a biomedical components developer.

DSM Biomedical says it agreed to license its Bionate II PCU to SpineVision SA of Antony, France, for the French firm’s Flex+2 system that addresses spinal disk degeneration. The polymer’s flexibility helps surgeons treat spinal diseases and selectively stabilize degenerated disk segments.

Bionate II PCU encapsulates a metal wire and allows increased freedom of movement and better fit to the spine without loss of strength or stability, according to a news release from DSM.

“DSM’s polyurethane materials have a proven clinical history and have been used in several dynamic stabilization devices and implants,” states DSM Biomedical director of business development William Fuller. “Our Bionate II PCU provides increased flexibility and shock absorbing characteristics, replicating the natural movements of the spine.”

SpineVision is launching the Flex+2 system initially in Europe.

Royal DSM is based in Heelen, Netherlands.
