Orbital Plastics Consulting Inc. is conducting a week-long course, for Scientific Molder 1 certification, at Engel Machinery Inc.’s technology center in York, Pa. The dates are April 8-13 and May 6-11.

The cost is $2,695 for the five-day course, with an optional sixth day for attendees who desire formal certification.

Orbital Plastics Consulting is run by Umberto Catignani in Atlanta.

The course includes more than 20 hours of hands-on machine-side instruction, and classroom theory. It is designed for molding technicians and setup personnel, process and tooling engineers, production supervisors, manufacturing and process engineering supervisors and other people who want to learn principles of scientific molding and injection press setup

Suggested prerequisites are basic understanding of the injection molding process and terminology and hands-on experience in molding and troubleshooting.

Topics include fundamentals of polymeric materials, controls, mold fundamentals, hands-on implementation of screw position switchover via scientific molding, estimating clamping force tonnage and sizing the injection unit.
