ANAHEIM, CALIF. — PolyOne Corp. has teamed with Philips to develop a custom-formulated material for a durable and safe sealing disc that allows nursing mothers convert Avent bottles into breast milk storage containers.

The disc, manufactured by Amsterdam-based Royal Philips Electronics NV, uses a formulation of PolyOne's Versaflex FFC, created for fatty-food contact applications. Philips expects the high-performance thermoplastic elastomer to help accelerate final product compliance testing, the company said at the Medical Design & Manufacturing West trade show, held Feb. 11-14 in Anaheim.

"Our proactive work in getting compliance for these materials helps our customers gain a significant competitive edge by raising the ability of their final products to meet increasingly strict regulatory requirements," said Charles Page, global marketing director for PolyOne GLS TPEs.

Versaflex FFC meets the Food and Drug Administration's 21 CFR 177.2600 requirements as well as similar regulatory requirements in the European Union and China that govern the n-hexane extraction requirements of TPE plastics that are intended for repeated or prolonged contact with fatty foods. PolyOne says Versaflex FFC was developed for products that require repeat refrigeration, reheating, storage and sterilization at elevated temperatures.
