Event to cover biodegradable polymers for implants

WALTHAM, MASS. -- Plastics in Medical Devices 2013 attendees can expect to hear from 27 experts in their respective fields, including a prominent figure in biodegradable polymers for implants.

Stephen McCarthy, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the plastics engineering department at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, and also co-director of the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center at UMass Lowell and UMass Worcester. In addition, he is director of the Biodegradable Polymer Research Center, where he is conducting research into biodegradable polymers and blends.

On May 14 at the conference in Waltham, Mass., outside Boston, McCarthy will provide an overview of biodegradable polymers for implants and three technologies: novel polylactic acid blends for bone fixation; nanospheres based on PCL-Pullulan for transdermal drug delivery; and electrospun silk bandages for burn wound treatment.

Other experts in materials and materials information technology that are presenting at PMD include Joseph Kennedy, distinguished professor of polymer science and chemistry at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio; Dawn Lissy, president of Empirical Testing Corp. in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Kristen Roenigk, medical-devices sales manager for the British materials information group Granta Design Ltd.
