CENTERVILLE, OHIO — Medical device molder DG Medical is expanding clean room capabilities with a new 35-ton, robotic-equipped injection press.

Like the existing presses in the Centerville, Ohio-based company’s Class 7 clean room, the new equipment is outfitted with a scientific molding process sensors and software. The eDART system from RJG tracks what is going on inside the mold as pieces are being made and the machine will automatically reject a part if it does not meet all preset parameters, said Linda Raisch, sales and marketing manager at DG Medical and DimcoGray Corp..

“We should be getting as close as possible to perfect parts every time,” she said.

The decision to invest in the new press came out of a combination of the need to better accommodate current business as well as expanding offerings for new and existing customers, Raisch said.

“The medical device market is one of the markets that is continuing to grow. The tax as part of the Affordable Care Act, that’s affecting somewhat the growth of the business, but from our standpoint, we’re continuing to see new products coming on the market and still a lot of innovation going on,” she said. “We see the medical arm of our company as having the most growth potential and so a lot of our growth strategy is to have a larger footprint in medical devices.”

The medical manufacturing arm of commercial thermosetter DimcoGray Corp. has also recently invested in equipment for assembly automation and secondary operations including a robotic gluing machine, packaging equipment including a heat sealer, auto bagger, and burst test equipment.

“We’ve been plastics molders for many, many years but the medical-device focus is one that has only been picking up in just the last three to five years. We are definitely working at building that business,” Raisch said.
