Quantum Composites has introduced a carbon-reinforced molding compound for high-volume automotive applications to replace metals and traditional composites.
The Bay City, Mich., firm says AMC-8590-50 allows weight reduction and semi-structural possibilities for better fuel efficiency.
The new composite uses high-tow 50K carbon fiber reinforcement in its family of compression-molded compounds. The series includes a low filament tow count of 3K and goes up to 50 K. Chopped fiber lengths are customized at 12, 25 and 50 millimeters and are available as well as in continuous fibers.
Resin matrices include vinyl ester, epoxy, phenolics and bismaleimde.
